NHTSA Complaint about PARKING BRAKE:ELECTRICAL filed July 24, 2021
NHTSA complaint #1759399 (ODI reference 11426312) concerns a 2020 NISSAN MAXIMA and was filed on July 24, 2021. The owner reports the failure occurred on May 28, 2021. The report was geocoded to Michigan based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as parking brake:electrical, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same NISSAN MAXIMA cohort independently describe similar parking brake:electrical failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
My emergency brake comes on any time I drive after a heavy rain.. it starts to illuminate vaguely, then eventually the brake light will come on and then eventually itâll start indicating to pull over. The first time I was in rush hour traffic on a busy highway. Was able to push down on the brake and release long enough to come off an exit before it came back on. Had to let the car sit for over 20 minutes. The second time we had heavy rain I got in the car the following day after 15 mins of driving the brake light started to illuminate and I could not get it to go off I had to pull over several time eventually sitting on the side of the ride for 20 mins again for it to go off. I could smell a burning smell when I exited the vehicle
