NHTSA Complaint about AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE filed May 3, 2021

NHTSA complaint #1744929 (ODI reference 11414883) concerns a 2012 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE and was filed on May 3, 2021. The owner reports the failure occurred on December 29, 2019. The report was geocoded to Illinois based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as air bags:frontal:passenger side:inflator module, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: yes, fire: no, injuries: 1, fatalities: 0. A complaint that flags a crash, fire, or fatality is escalated on NHTSA's internal review queue and factors more heavily into any Preliminary Evaluation decision on this make and model. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE cohort independently describe similar air bags:frontal:passenger side:inflator module failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2012 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.

Complaint Description

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN, I AM WRITING THIS LETTER IN REGARDS TO MY PREVIOUS VEHICLE THAT WAS INVOLVED IN A ACCIDENT. THIS VEHICLE HAD NO WORK DONE, MEANING THE RECALLS ON IT WERE NEVER DONE.AND FOR THAT REASON, I HOLD THE MANUFACTURER RESPONSIBLE FOR NOT MAKING SURE THE PREVIOUS IWNERS/DEALERS ARE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS. THERE WERE A TOTAL OF 10 RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE STARTING FROM 9-26-2011 TO 11-14-2019. AND FOR THAT FAILURE, IT LEAD TO AN ALMOST FATAL ACCIDENT OF MY LIVED ONE. I HAVE ALL THE NECESSARY PAPERWORK CONCERNING THIS MATTER.
