Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about UNKNOWN OR OTHER filed September 6, 2020
NHTSA complaint #1690293 (ODI reference 11353432) concerns a 2008 Jeep Liberty and was filed on September 6, 2020. The owner reports the failure occurred on September 5, 2020. The vehicle had 150,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Arizona based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as unknown or other, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers, the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same Jeep Liberty cohort independently describe similar unknown or other failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
I HAVE A 2008 JEEP LIBERTY WITH A SKYSLIDER THAT RECENTLY BROKE. NO ONE CAN REPAIR OR FIND PARTS TO REPAIR THIS. AT HIGH SPEEDS THE TOP CAN LIFT OFF OF THE VEHICLE AND FLAP IN THE WIND. IT LEAKS WATER BECAUSE IT NO LONGER SEALS. IT POSES A DANGER TO MYSELF AND OTHERS WHEN IT CATCHES WIND BECOMES LOOSE AND LIFTS OFF OF THE JEEP. ITS A DISTRACTIONS BECAUSE IT DOESNT WORK CORRECTLY AND PERIOD FLAPPINGS CAUSE ME TO LOOK AWAY FROM THE ROAD. I AM CURRENTLY USE USING PIECES OF METAL TO JUST KEEP IN CLOSED. THE ONLINE COMMUNITY IS ASKING FOR A RECALL AND THINKS THIS POSES A DANGER TO OTHER DRIVERS.
