NHTSA Complaint about EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL filed June 25, 2020

NHTSA complaint #1672096 (ODI reference 11330870) concerns a 2014 TESLA MODEL S and was filed on June 25, 2020. The owner reports the failure occurred on February 23, 2020. The vehicle had 26,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to California based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as equipment:electrical, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same TESLA MODEL S cohort independently describe similar equipment:electrical failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED IN YOUR OPEN INVESTIGATION, NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: PE20010. THE TOUCHSCREEN DISPLAY WENT BLACK ON 02/23/20, NO TOUCHSCREEN-RELATED FUNCTIONS WORKED (INCLUDING CAMERA DISPLAYS, NAVIGATION, CHARGING, ETC). TESLA SERVICE STATION REPLACED THE MCU (3/10/20-3/20/20), AT MY EXPENSE, EVEN THOUGH THIS FLASH DEVICE FAILS BECAUSE OF TESLA'S OWN EXTREMELY HIGH NUMBER OF PROGRAM-ERASE CYCLES -- AND THAT MASSIVE DATA TRANSFER BENEFITS ONLY TESLA, NOT THE CAR OWNER. THEY INSTALL MCUS THAT FAIL DUE TO THE HIGH DEMANDS PLACED ON THEM BY THE COMPANY, FOR THE COMPANY. THEN THEY CHARGE THE CONSUMER FOR A REPLACEMENT, AND THIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN AND AGAIN. *TR
