NHTSA Complaint about SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:DRUM:WHEEL CYLINDERS filed February 26, 2020
NHTSA complaint #1649668 (ODI reference 11311597) concerns a 2013 KIA FORTE and was filed on February 26, 2020. The owner reports the failure occurred on November 1, 2019. The vehicle had 79,979 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Missouri based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:drum:wheel cylinders, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same KIA FORTE cohort independently describe similar service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:drum:wheel cylinders failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2013 KIA FORTE shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
MY BRAKE PEDDLE BEGAN TO STICK. I WOULD HAVE TO TAP ON THE BRAKE PEDDLE TO GET IT TO UNSTICK. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE KIA DEALER NEAR ME. THEY TOLD ME IT COULD BE DUE THE THE BRAKE STOPPER RECALL. THEY WANTED TO DO A DIAGNOSTIC TEST THEN. WHICH I COULD NOT AFFORD AT THAT TIME. THE PROBLEM GOT WORSE. THE BRAKES ACTUALLY STARTED ENGAGING ON THEIR OWN. ONE TIME I WAS ON THE HWY AND HAD TO PULL OVER AND TAP ON MY BRAKES TO GET THEM TO UNENGAGE . I TOOK MY CAR BACK TP THE DEALER HAD THEM DO THE DIAGNOSTICS. THEY TOLD ME MY MASTER CYLINDER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND BRAKES FRONT AND REAR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. SO I CALLED KIA CORPORATE AFYER READING THE DIAGNOSTICS REPORT. I WAS HUNG UP ON TWICE! I THEN TOOK MY CAR TO ANOTHER PLACE AND HAD THEM DO THEIR OWN DIAGNOSTICS. I HAD TO COME OUT OF POCKET TO REPLACE A REPAIR THE ENTIRE ABS SYSTEM ON MY CAR. IT WAS DUE TO A DEFECT INSIDE THE MASTER CYLINDER. THE MAATER CYLINDER WAS COMING APART FROM THE INSIDE. THE PEICES WERE CLOGGING MY BRAKE LINES.
