2019 TOYOTA CAMRY — Complaint #1619701
Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about AIR BAGS:FRONTAL filed November 10, 2019
NHTSA complaint #1619701 (ODI reference 11279288) concerns a 2019 TOYOTA CAMRY and was filed on November 10, 2019. The owner reports the failure occurred on October 9, 2019. The vehicle had 5,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Florida based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as air bags:frontal, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: yes, fire: no, injuries: 1, fatalities: 0. A complaint that flags a crash, fire, or fatality is escalated on NHTSA's internal review queue and factors more heavily into any Preliminary Evaluation decision on this make and model. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same TOYOTA CAMRY cohort independently describe similar air bags:frontal failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
I HAVE A 2009 CAMRY THAT I LEASED ON 3/8/19. ON 10/9/19 I WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT, NOT CITED, THE CAR THAT HIT ME FROM THE REAR DOING 90 MPM UPON INPACT PUSHED IN FROM SOUTH BOUND TO EAST BOUND. I WAS THEN HIT ON RIGHT FRONT SIDE BY AN 18 WHEELER AND HAD 4 RADIAL FRACTURES ON MY LEFT ARM; MY LEFT HAND FLIPPED OVER BACKWARDS ON MY FOREARM AND BONES PROTRUDED FROM EACH SIDE OF ARMS. NOT ONE AIRBAG WAS DEPLOYED FROM THE INCEPTION OF THE ACCIDENT TO THE ACCIDENT ON MY ARM. I NOW HAVE A TOTALED CAMRY; I HAD SURGERY ON MY LEFT ARM TWO DAYS LATER, LOST OF WAGES AND DISABLED ON MY LEFT SIDE. TOYOTA IS NOT TAKING ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS SITUATION AS IF THE AIRBAGS HAD DEPLOYED; I WOULD NOT HAVE THIS RADIAL FRACTURE, WHICH IS WHAT I WAS PAYING FOR BY LEASING THIS TOYOTA CAMRY 2019. I NEED HELP. I HAVE PICTURES OF THE OUTSIDE OF THE CAR AS WELL AS INSIDE THE CAR SHOWING NO AIRBAGS DEPLOYED.
