NHTSA Complaint about EQUIPMENT:MECHANICAL:SLIDE-IN CAMPER filed July 23, 1999

NHTSA complaint #159998 (ODI reference 709046) concerns a 1993 CHEVROLET CHEVROLET TRUCK and was filed on July 23, 1999. The owner reports the failure occurred on July 17, 1999. The report was geocoded to North Carolina based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as equipment:mechanical:slide-in camper, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same CHEVROLET CHEVROLET TRUCK cohort independently describe similar equipment:mechanical:slide-in camper failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 1993 CHEVROLET CHEVROLET TRUCK shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.

Complaint Description

FIBERGLASS BED COVER SOLD BY LEONARD BUILDINGS AND TRUCK ACCESSORIES 4239 CAPITOL BLVD. RALEIGH, NC 27604. HEAVY (100+ LBS) COVER HELD ON BY TWO FLIMSY ALUMINUM HINGES. I FOUND THAT ONE HINGE HAD CRACKED COMPLETELY AND THE OTHER ONE PART WAY. HAD THE OTHER HINGE FAILED AND THE COVER BLOWN OFF OF THE VEHICLE, IT WOULD HAVE CAUSED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE AND/OR INJURY TO ANY VEHICLE/PERSON WHICH IT HIT. I BELIVE THAT LEONARD SHOULD BE MADE TO RECALL/REPAIR THESE COVERS OR AT LEAST NOTIFY OWNERS OF THE POTENTIAL DANGER.
