NHTSA Complaint about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:ADAS:PARKING ASSIST:SENSORS filed March 23, 2019
NHTSA complaint #1551273 (ODI reference 11191064) concerns a 2018 BMW X2 and was filed on March 23, 2019. The owner reports the failure occurred on March 9, 2019. The vehicle had 5,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Virginia based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as electrical system:adas:parking assist:sensors, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: yes, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. A complaint that flags a crash, fire, or fatality is escalated on NHTSA's internal review queue and factors more heavily into any Preliminary Evaluation decision on this make and model. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same BMW X2 cohort independently describe similar electrical system:adas:parking assist:sensors failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
2018 BMW X2. THE CAR HAS THE PARKING ASSIST FUNCTION, WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO PARALLEL PARK THE CAR. AT DELIVERY, I WAS TOLD HOW TO USE THE SYSTEM, THE SYSTEM FINDS A SPACE, STEERS AND BRAKES. THE VIDEO ON THE DEALERSHIP WEBSITE SAYS IT BRAKES FOR YOU. HTTPS://WWW.PASSPORTBMW.COM/BLOGS/846/MARLOW-HEIGHTS-BMW-DEALER/WATCH-HOW-TO-ACTIVATE-THE-PARKING-ASSISTANT-FEATURED-ON-YOUR-BMW/. THE VIDEO MAKES NO DISTINCTION BETWEEN MODELS AND IS UP AS OF 3/23/19. THE VEHICLE MANUAL SAYS NOTHING ABOUT THE DRIVER BRAKING DURING THE PROCESS. SEE ATTACHED PICTURES OF MANUAL. PARKING ASSIST FUNCTION BACKED INTO A CAR THE FIRST TIME I TRIED IT, DAMAGING THE BUMPER. THE SCREEN IN THE CAR DOES SAY TO USE BRAKES, BUT THAT IS INCONSISTENT WITH THE SALES PEOPLE, THE MANUAL, AND THE VIDEO. MOREOVER, IT IS A FLAW IN THE SYSTEM IF IT REQUIRES YOU TO BRAKE BUT WILL OPERATE WITHOUT USING THE BRAKES. IMPOSSIBLE TO READ SCREEN AND BACK UP AT SAME TIME. SYSTEM SERVICED, THE DEALERSHIP WAS CONFUSED
