NHTSA Complaint about EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS:HIGH/LOW BEAM DIMMER SWITCH filed February 6, 2018

NHTSA complaint #1445758 (ODI reference 11067191) concerns a 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA and was filed on February 6, 2018. The owner reports the failure occurred on September 1, 2017. The vehicle had 120,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Florida based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as exterior lighting:headlights:high/low beam dimmer switch, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same NISSAN ALTIMA cohort independently describe similar exterior lighting:headlights:high/low beam dimmer switch failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

MY NAME IS [XXX] AND I AM WRITING TO YOU REGARDING MY 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA. I AM HAVING AN ISSUE WITH MY LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS. APPARENTLY I WAS ON MY WAY HOME ONE EVENING WITH MY BABY AND I HAD ON MY LOW BEAMS AND I COULD NOT SEE THE ROAD AHEAD OF ME, THE LIGHTS WERE ON; BUT, NOTHING WAS COMING OUT OF IT. MY HUSBAND CHANGED THE BULB AND STILL NOTHING. I TOOK IT TO SUTHERLIN NISSAN AND THE SERVICE GUY TOLD ME HE IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEMS WITH THE HEADLIGHTS IN THE 2013 ALTIMA, AND HE HAVE SEEN NUMEROUS ONES THAT HAD TO BE CHANGED. I AM OUT OF WARRANTY; SO, I WAS TOLD IT WOULD BE $130 TO CHECK IT OUT TO SEE WHAT IS GOING ON. THIS PAST FRIDAY MY CAR STARTED LOSING POWER AND SHUTTING OFF, I TOOK IT TO THE SHOP AND THEY HAD TO CHANGE THE AIR FLOW SENSOR AND WHEN THE GUY CHECKED MY HEADLIGHTS HE SAID IT IS BLACK INSIDE THE PROJECTION AREA NOTHING WILL COME THROUGH EVEN IF YOU CHANGED THE BULBS AND I EVEN BOUGHT A LED KIT AND THE SHOP TOLD ME NOTHING WILL WORK BECAUSE THE PROJECTION IS BURNT OUT.
