NHTSA Complaint about SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST filed December 28, 2016

NHTSA complaint #1344386 (ODI reference 10938391) concerns a 2015 CHEVROLET CRUZE and was filed on December 28, 2016. The owner reports the failure occurred on December 22, 2016. The vehicle had 39,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Texas based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as service brakes, hydraulic:power assist, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same CHEVROLET CRUZE cohort independently describe similar service brakes, hydraulic:power assist failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

POWER ASSIST FAILED, MAKING STEERING DIFFICULT, HAPPENED DURING LANE CHANGE ON FREEWAY AT 70 MPH, THIS HAPPENED IN CONJUNCTION WITH RANDOM SCREEN LOSS ON INFOTAINMENT SCREEN. ALSO RANDOM ERROR MESSAGES. UPON TAKING CAR TO DEALER, THEY AGREED IT WAS PROBABLY AN ISSUE ADDRESSED UNDER SPECIAL COVERAGE 14311, BUT IT TURNED OUT THAT IT WAS NOT. MY 24 YR OLD DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING , I AM THANKFUL SHE SURVIVED, NO ONE SHOULD EXPERIENCE LOSS OF POWER STEERING, ESPECIALLY ON THE FREEWAY. ODDLY I ENDED UP PAYING OUT OF MY POCKET FOR A NEW BATTERY AND A POS AND A NEG CABLE. IT WOULD APPEAR THAT GM SHOULD ALERT MORE OWNERS OF THIS ISSUE THAN THEY HAVE SO FAR, TO PREVENT FURTHER DEATHS. *TR
