Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: SENSING SYSTEM filed October 19, 2016
NHTSA complaint #1327124 (ODI reference 10917387) concerns a 2015 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE and was filed on October 19, 2016. The owner reports the failure occurred on July 21, 2016. The vehicle had 6,493 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Arkansas based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as forward collision avoidance: sensing system, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE cohort independently describe similar forward collision avoidance: sensing system failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
FORWARD COLLISION WARNING SYSTEM WITH BRAKE MITIGATION CONTINUES TO ENGAGE INTERMITTENTLY ON ITS OWN. THIS IS NOT TO BE TAKEN LIGHTLY. THE FORWARD COLLISION WARNING WITH BRAKE MITIGATION ENGAGES INTERMITTENTLY, OUT OF THE BLUE, WHEN THERE IS NO NEED. MEANING; I'LL BE DRIVING ALONG . . . NO CARS OR OBJECTS IN FRONT OF ME, AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE SYSTEM SLAMS ON THE BRAKES, JERKS VERY ABRUPTLY, AUDIBLE BELLS GO OFF AND THE SCREEN ILLUMINATES BRAKE BRAKE BRAKE! THERE HAVE BEEN 3 INSTANCES IN WHICH MY FAMILY AND I HAVE NEARLY BEEN REAR-ENDED DUE TO THIS ERRATIC BEHAVIOR THAT THE VEHICLE IS DEMONSTRATING. I'VE BEEN IN A COMPARABLY EQUIPPED LOANER CAR FOR THE PAST FIVE WEEKS AND IT HAS NOT DEMONSTRATED THIS TYPE OF INCONSISTENT, ERRATIC BEHAVIOR. THIS VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE, BE IN OR AROUND. THE JEEP WAS PURCHASED ON JULY 9, 2016. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE INTO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT 4 TIMES SINCE JULY 21, 2016. AFTER EXAMINATION OF DAMAGE, ELECTRIC TECH REVIEW AND 2 TEST DRIVES
