Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY filed September 21, 2015

NHTSA complaint #1221187 (ODI reference 10766543) concerns a 2007 SATURN OUTLOOK and was filed on September 21, 2015. The owner reports the failure occurred on September 21, 2015. The vehicle had 135,676 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Michigan based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as equipment adaptive/mobility, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same SATURN OUTLOOK cohort independently describe similar equipment adaptive/mobility failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

FOR A COUPLE WEEKS I'VE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS OPENING MY TRUNK HATCH, I TRIED AGAIN TODAY AND IT DIDN'T OPEN. I THEN BENT DOWN TO PICK UP MY BAGS WHEN THE HATCH OPENED ON ITS OWN AND HIT ME IN THE HEAD PRETTY HARD. IT'S VERY FRUSTRATING NOT BEING ABLE TO OPEN MY TRUNK WHEN I HAVE GROCERIES IN IT. I DIDN'T GO TO THE DOCTOR OR THE ER BECAUSE I WORK IN THE MEDICAL FIELD AND CAN RECOGNIZE THE SIGNS OF A CONCUSSION.
