NHTSA Complaint about EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS filed January 6, 2015

NHTSA complaint #1145152 (ODI reference 10670523) concerns a 2010 VOLVO XC70 and was filed on January 6, 2015. The owner reports the failure occurred on March 1, 2010. The vehicle had 500 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to California based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as equipment:other:labels, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same VOLVO XC70 cohort independently describe similar equipment:other:labels failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

SAFETY ISSUE THE TIRE PRESSURE LABEL ON OUR XC70 (VIN: [XXX]) LIST THE PROPER TIRE PRESSURE AS BEING 33 PSI. AT THIS PRESSURE THE TIRE PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT IS CONSTANTLY ON. THIS RENDERS THE FEDERAL MANDATED TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM ESSENTIALLY NON-FUNCTIONING AND PLACES THE DRIVER AT RISK. VOLVO OF NORTH AMERICA HAS REVIEWED THIS ISSUE AND HAS CONFIRMED THE 33 PSI VALUE, NOT THE HIGHER VALUE IN THE OWNERS MANUAL, IS CORRECT. VOLVO HAS CONFIRMED THEIR RECALL TO REPLACE THE INCORRECT 33 PSI LABELS ON THE 08-10 XC70 DOES NOT APPLY TO THIS VEHICLE. SINCE PROPER TIRE PRESSURE AND THE TIRE MONITORING SYSTEM IS AN IMPORTANT ELEMENT IN SAFE DRIVING, VOLVO NEED TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR
