Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH filed May 29, 2014

NHTSA complaint #1070180 (ODI reference 10594905) concerns a 2007 CHEVROLET COBALT and was filed on May 29, 2014. The owner reports the failure occurred on February 1, 2012. The vehicle had 89,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Mississippi based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as electrical system:ignition:switch, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same CHEVROLET COBALT cohort independently describe similar electrical system:ignition:switch failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2007 CHEVROLET COBALT shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.

Complaint Description

HAVE NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT YET EVEN THOUGH MY AUTOMOBILE IS THE SUBJECT OF A SAFETY RECALL. THE IGNITION SWITCH HAS TO BE REPLACED AND I HAVE BEEN ADVISED THE DEALER WILL MAKE THE NECESSARY REPAIR AT NO COST TO ME. MY PROBLEM IS THAT EVEN THOUGH I HAVE CONTACTED THE DEALER AND HAVE PROVIDED THE REQUESTED INFORMATION, IT SEEMS THAT PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE, AT LEAST TO MY DEALER. I CALLED THEM AGAIN TODAY AND THE DEALER SAYS THEY HAVE HUNDREDS OF REPAIR REQUESTS BUT HAVE ONLY RECEIVED ELEVEN (11) SWITCHES. MY CHEVROLET DEALER IS HERRIN GEAR CHEVROLET, 1685 HIGH STREET, JACKSON, MS. ARE ALL CHEVROLET DEALERS EXPERIENCING THE SAME DELAY IN RECEIVING THE NECESSARY PARTS? THE SAFETY RECALL IS 13454. IF I HAVE CONTACTED THE INCORRECT DEPARTMENT WILL YOU PLEASE ADVISE SO THAT I CAN ROUTE MY CONCERNS TO THE APPROPRIATE PEOPLE? THANKS *TR
