NHTSA Complaint about BACK OVER PREVENTION:WARNINGS:EXTERNAL/PEDESTRIAN ALERT filed May 8, 2014
NHTSA complaint #1063260 (ODI reference 10587235) concerns a 2014 TOYOTA RAV4 and was filed on May 8, 2014. The owner reports the failure occurred on May 8, 2014. The vehicle had 2,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to North Carolina based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as back over prevention:warnings:external/pedestrian alert, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same TOYOTA RAV4 cohort independently describe similar back over prevention:warnings:external/pedestrian alert failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
WHEN VEHICLE IS STARTED AND PUT INTO REVERSE THE BACKUP CAMERA IS DIM AND UNVIEWABLE FOR 15 SEC. BACKING UP DURING THIS PERIOD IS OBVIOUSLY HAZARDOUS AND IT IS VERY ANNOYING TO HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL IT BECOMES VISIBLE. THIS IS RELATED TO THE WHOLE DISPLAY CONSOLE AS THE RADIO, NAV SYSTEM, AND BU CAMERA ALL COME ON AFTER 15 SEC. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN ON MY WIFE'S 2007 PRIUS ALTHOUGH OCCASIONALLY IT DOES NOT SWITCH TO THE BU CAMERA AT ALL. *TR
