NHTSA Complaint about POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:PARK/NEUTRAL START INTERLOCK SWITCH filed April 16, 2014

NHTSA complaint #1057367 (ODI reference 10583172) concerns a 2014 LINCOLN MKZ and was filed on April 16, 2014. The owner reports the failure occurred on March 22, 2014. The vehicle had 500 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Michigan based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as power train:automatic transmission:park/neutral start interlock switch, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: yes, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. A complaint that flags a crash, fire, or fatality is escalated on NHTSA's internal review queue and factors more heavily into any Preliminary Evaluation decision on this make and model. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same LINCOLN MKZ cohort independently describe similar power train:automatic transmission:park/neutral start interlock switch failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

COPY OF EMAIL TO FORD MOTOR ON APRIL 16, 2014: WE RECENTLY LEASED A 2014 LINCOLN MKZ. THE NEW PUSH BUTTON SHIFT CONTROL THAT WE ARE NOT ACCUSTOMED TO, RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT WITH $1187 WORTH OF DAMAGES TO THE FRONT END. FORTUNATELY, THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND THE BUILDING/DRAIN PIPE WE HIT DID NOT SUSTAIN DAMAGE REQUIRING A POLICE REPORT OR INSURANCE CLAIM. SUMMARY: CAR LEASED FROM STAR LINCOLN ON FEBRUARY 22ND. WHILE DRIVING TO FLORIDA ON MARCH 22ND WE STOPPED FOR GASOLINE/COFFEE. AFTER FILLING THE CAR I WENT INSIDE THE SERVICE STATION. MY WIFE SUBSEQUENTLY MOVED THE CAR FROM THE PUMP AREA TO THE PARKING AREA IN FRONT OF THE SERVICE STATION. SHE THEN STOPPED THE CAR WITH THE BRAKE AND THOUGHT THE CAR WAS THEN IN PARK. UPON TAKING HER FOOT OFF THE BRAKE, THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD HITTING THE BUILDING CORNER AND KNOCKING DOWN THE DRAIN PIPE. FIVE MORE FEET OVER, SHE WOULD HAVE CRASHED INTO THE SERVICE STATION WINDOW SO WE CONSIDER OURSELVES LUCKY. MY WIFE AND I ARE EXPERIENCED, LONG
