Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about AIR BAGS filed April 16, 2019
NHTSA complaint #1558473 (ODI reference 11196754) concerns a 2009 AUDI A4 and was filed on April 16, 2019. The owner reports the failure occurred on April 16, 2017. The report was geocoded to Florida based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as air bags, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same AUDI A4 cohort independently describe similar air bags failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2009 AUDI A4 shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
TAKATA INFLATOR: FOR AT LEAST 2 YEARS, IF NOT MORE, WE HAVE RECEIVED RECALL NOTICES FROM AUDI USA TO CALL OUR LOCAL SERVICE AGENT AND MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO GO IN AND HAVE THE AIRBAGS CHANGED. WE HAVE CONTACTED THEM ASKING FOR AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THIS WORK DONE ON AN ALMOST MONTHLY BASIS AND THEY NEVER HAVE THE REPLACEMENT PART. THE A4 HAS BEEN LOCATED IN HUMID SOUTH FLORIDA FOR ALL IT'S LIFE AND IT IS NOW 10 YEARS OLD. MOST IMPORTANTLY, WE'D LIKE TO HAND IT DOWN TO OUR TEENAGE DAUGHTER, HOWEVER, WE ARE RELUCTANT UNTIL IT IS FIXED. THE COLLECTION, OUR LOCAL AUDI DEALERSHIP HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO PROVIDE US WITH THE REPLACEMENT AIRBAGS.
