NHTSA Complaint about ENGINE filed April 15, 2019
NHTSA complaint #1558214 (ODI reference 11196564) concerns a 2013 KIA SPORTAGE and was filed on April 15, 2019. The owner reports the failure occurred on April 10, 2019. The vehicle had 73,830 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Utah based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as engine, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same KIA SPORTAGE cohort independently describe similar engine failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2013 KIA SPORTAGE shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
WHILE DRIVING AT 40 MPH ON 4800 SOUTH STREET IN SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN. I PULLED OVER IMMEDIATELY. I COULD NOT TURN THE ENGINE OVER WITH THE STARTER OR ANY OTHER MEANS. IT WAS TOWED INTO THE KIA DEALER AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD THE ENGINE IS SEIZED UP AND HAS TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER HAS TOLD ME THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM WITH SOME OF THESE 2013 MODEL YEARS. KIA HAS SAID THIS PARTICULAR CAR IS NOT ON THEIR RECALL LIST. IF YOU LOOK ONLINE THE DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM OF CARS WITH A RECALL IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED HERE. I BELIVE THIS IS A REAL PROBLEM WITH THIS PARTICULAR ENGINE AND KIA IS NOT STANDING BEHIND IT.
