NHTSA Complaint about ENGINE filed April 14, 2019

NHTSA complaint #1557826 (ODI reference 11196136) concerns a 2015 HONDA ODYSSEY and was filed on April 14, 2019. The owner reports the failure occurred on April 9, 2019. The vehicle had 23,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Illinois based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as engine, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: yes, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. A complaint that flags a crash, fire, or fatality is escalated on NHTSA's internal review queue and factors more heavily into any Preliminary Evaluation decision on this make and model. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same HONDA ODYSSEY cohort independently describe similar engine failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

AFTER DRIVING A FEW MILES UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS WE PARKED OUR MINIVAN IN OUR PARKING SPOT BEHIND OUR HOUSE. WHILE GETTING OUT OF THE MINIVAN THERE WAS AN ODOR AND A TINY BIT OF SMOKE FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. AFTER WAITING A COUPLE MINUTES THE SMOKE SEEMED TO GO AWAY. WE LEFT THE MINIVAN PARKED AND ABOUT 10-20 MINUTES LATER IT STARTED ON FIRE AND WE RECEIVED A CALL FROM OUR NEIGHBORS THAT THE FIRE DEPARTMENT HAD BEEN CALLED AND THEY WERE PUTTING OUT THE FIRE. I AM UPLOADING A PICTURE OF THE BURNT MINIVAN AND THE LAST SERVICE RECORD FOR A REGULAR OIL CHANGE ON 12/29/2018
