NHTSA Complaint about UNKNOWN OR OTHER filed April 14, 2019

NHTSA complaint #1557797 (ODI reference 11196117) concerns a 2018 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE and was filed on April 14, 2019. The owner reports the failure occurred on January 25, 2019. The vehicle had 10,200 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Pennsylvania based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as unknown or other, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE cohort independently describe similar unknown or other failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

SEVERAL ISSUES BUT THE MOST SERIOUS ISSUE WAS ON 1-25-2019 WHEN I HAD AN APPOINTMENT AND PARKED FORWARD INTO A PARKING SPACE. I WAS EARLY SO I DECIDED TO BACK UP INTO ANOTHER PARKING SPACE. THERE WAS AN OPEN SPOT RIGHT BEHIND ME. WHEN I BACKED UP IN BETWEEN TWO PARKED CARS, MY VEHICLE ZOOMED OUT OF CONTROL, OVER AN ISLAND ABOUT 7 FEET WIDE AND THEN OFF THE ISLAND. I WAS TRYING TO BRAKE BUT THE VEHICLE KEPT GOING BACKWARDS. FINALLY THE VEHICLE STOPPED. THIS OCCURRED IN THE PARKING LOT OF SCHOOL. . THANK GOD THERE WERE NO CHILDREN OUT ON RECESS. MY SON CAME AND GOT ME. I WAS SO SHAKEN UP. MY HUSBAND TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP. HE WAS TOLD THAT ONE OF THE SYSTEM ON THE SCREEN WAS ON AND HE TURNED IT OFF. WE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO LEARN WHAT THE SYSTEM WAS AND WAS TOLD NO ONE KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS. WE REQUESTED THE OWNER OF THE DEARLERSHIP TO CONTACT US BUT NO RESPONSE TO DATE.
